Yom Kippur is considered the holiest day of the year for many Jewish people. Also known as the day of atonement, its themes are focused around contemplation and repentance. Many secular Jews will even celebrate this holiday when they don't normally practice others. So, it is very serious and important to teach your children.

However, these themes of amending actions, seeking forgiveness and contemplating one's behavior can be difficult to teach to children and younger people. One way to educate children is through fun and games. Consider dressing up for this holiday in ancient garb as you explain traditions and read from the tomes for little ones. They're easily entertained and thus their attention garnered for this most important of events.

If you're having trouble finding costumes that fit this holiday is easy enough to adapt something like a Mark Anthony costume or even a Hercules costume. This may not have been the original intent for these costumes, but they do fit the time period and are often good ways to represent ancient times. Also, its traditional to wear white on this holiday symbolizing one's purity. You can dress in white robes while speaking with children. Or even help the children make up their own ceremonial garb a few days prior to the holiday. This can be a great way to introduce Yom Kippur to children, especially if you are handy with the sewing machine. They’ll have time to anticipate the day, thinking about their actions during the past year, get involved with preparations and look forward to wearing a garment of their own creation.
