Rolie Polie Olie"s Persimmon Cookies

At the Rolie Polie party for Steve they had Persimmon cookies inside the goodie bags, and I could just not resist asking, I got the recipe from Steve's mom and this is how this beauty is done:

1 c. sugar 1/2 c. shortening (butter or margarine work too)
1 egg
1 c. persimmon pulp mixed with 1 t. baking soda
1/2 t. each cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice
1 c. chopped dates or raisins
1 c. chopped nuts (walnuts are good)
1-3/4 to 2 c. flour (depending on how soft you want the
cookies)
1 t. baking powder
1/2 t. salt

Cream shortening and sugar; add egg and mix well. Add persimmon pulp (it will be gelatinous with the soda mixed in) and dry ingredients. Fold together. Add dates and nuts last. Drop onto greased cookie sheet from spoon.

Bake at 350 F for about 10 to 12 minutes--til they are as you like them. Cool (ha!) and enjoy!!

These Cookies are incredible because they are done so quickly and they have a great flavor. I normally make them for Sarah my five year old and she just gets so happy when I do that she will invite the neighbors for a snack and they have a great time just eating. Golly, this Rolie Polie Olie character can seem a little hard to understand at first. However there are a few things that will help you in putting together your party. This is a computer animated cartoon for preschoolers. Rolie Polie Olie is a preschool aged robot and his entire family are robots. In fact just about everyone on the show is a robot. The show primarily features bright primary colors and simple geometric shapes like boxes and spheres. Now you have everything you need to create a simple kids party and a great party menu.

Make a fun shapes menu of fresh fruit cut in geometrics and arraigned on variously shaped serving trays. Pineapple and apple rings will be fun. Apples will turn brown unless a fruit preservative or lemon juice is used. Next on the list of fun shapes are bananas and seedless oranges which can be left in their colorful peels until eaten. Nice seedless grapes should be removed from their stems and placed in a contrasting colored bowl. Watermelon should be cut in half inch thick wedge shaped slices with seeds and rind removed. Strawberries, peaches and other seasonal local favorites can make a colorful addition to this child's menu. Crisp rice bars will make a great addition to this menu. Simply melt one bag of marshmallows with one tablespoon of margarine over low heat then stir in two cups of crisp rice cereal. Spread the mixture in a 13 by 9 inch buttered pan and cool before cutting.
