Oktoberfest COOKIES

Oktoberfest is a time for great fun and food and, homemade cookies are no exception. Oktoberfest is a festival held in Munich, Bavaria, Germany that runs from late September until the first weekend of October. It is also known as the world’s largest fair. One of the most famous cookies to come from the Oktoberfest fair would have to be the German Springerle Cookie or, Anise Cookie for short.

Although these are generally a homemade Christmas cookie originating from Bavaria and Austria they have become quite common at the Oktoberfest events. These amazing cookies are white with anise flavoring. They are simply made from a basic egg, flour, sugar dough. Most generally these cookies are either rectangular or circular in their shape and have some type of picture that is stamped onto the top. These pictures are imprinted into the cookie from a specially carved Springerle Rolling Pin or, flat molds. Once the cookies are baked the designs are often times enhanced with edible food colors.

The name for these great homemade cookies actually comes from an Old German Dialect that means “little knight “ or “jumping Horse” They have been traced back in history as far back as the Julfest which was a celebration of pagan German tribes. These cookies were also once used to celebrate other great events such as weddings and births. It is also a common practice to exchange them during the holiday seasons. So, the next time that you are searching for the perfect homemade cookie for your next Oktoberfest give these tasty treats a try. The kids can even watch while they are sitting at the table coloring some German based coloring sheets.
